You need to look to another cause Pete as these are actually Ladybug larvae & the only thing they are interested in eating is aphids that are hanging around. Your garden has been blessed. Now the interesting part is if you watch these over a period of time you will see them gradually change, like they're curling into a ball. They will harden & gradually develop that wonderful & colourful shell & the cycle continues.
If you do a search on google images using the words ladybug larvae you will see many shots of these.
If you don't spray poisons in your garden the colonies will grow & return & keep your plants pest free.
