03 MAY 05 UPHEAVAL AND SURVIVAL

There are at least three bird varieties with nests in my yard (that I am aware of)
A dove is in my front hanging basket
There is a bluejay in a tree in the backyard

And there used to be a robin's nest with three babies
Today I found all three on the ground, one appeared to have teeth marks (could have happened afterwards)

You are looking up into a tree at a disconsolate mama robin
She just hops from limb to limb making that quiet warning cheeping aound
But there are no baby birds to hear her

In the inset is her overturned nest (the camera is looking up in to the tree)
All of the contents could be found where they hit the ground
I don't know if the nest had help falling or if it just was perched too precariously on the branch

I hope they build again

Sad story. Maybe she'll pick a better spot next time.

That is so sad! I once had a nest of wrens in my garage where an outdoor cat lived. I watched them daily so I could protect them when they fledged. Well, they did it while I was at work and I came home to three dead baby birds. The mother was running around frantically calling them. It was heartbreaking so I know what it's like.

Ah, sad tale that I much identify with.

Life can be cruel for some. She does look sad, the poor little girl.
