04 FEB 05 END OF AN ERA

Here, people were standing for a benediction . . . a hope that the merger will be less hostile than the proceedings thus far

Today marked the end of an era in the Navy . . . .
The dental healthcare providers have been merged with the medical healthcare providers

On paper it looks like a good idea and seems to make sense

In reality, it's more like a hostile takeover

The Dental Corps, which was established in 1948, was ceremoniously dis-established as of 11:45 this morning

There was great pomp and circumstance . . and quite a few heavy hearts
Not to mention a lot of scared rabbits (no one knows who is leaving next . . .)

The event had big military names to shepherd the event

the picture below shows the pomp as best I could . . . . hand held at one second over my head . . it's decidedly outa focus =]

Sorry to hear that Pete. I hope everything works out well for you.

Rationalising is one thing; 'improvements' that lower the service, including the morale of those left behind, is another.

I too hope that everything works out, Pete

In the circumstances, you've delivered an evocative photo.

Pete, I hadn't realized this was happening. My father spent his Navy career in the Dental Corps. He always joked that dentists had "shore duty" all the time, since they were stationed either on real shore (naval bases) or on ships big enough to be like shore (since only carriers and battleships were large enough to have real live dental officers. I always liked it when he was aboard ship, since he always brought home neat stuff. I think he hoped I'd be a dentist (after all, my initials are DDS). I also spent time in the Navy, but as a line officer. Best of luck. Hope this won't affect your picture taking.

The Navy people at Callender Field in New Orleans get excellent dental care--retirees included. Wonder what we did right for a change.

I too hope for the best. So much uncertainty in these times is hard to live with.

Whoa, Pete, hope it comes out ok in the end.

I only used the Navy dental clinics a few times because dependents had no access to dental care when the ex was active duty ('63 to '83). Don't know what the status of that is since it also wasn't part of the retirement program either.... interesting view.
