28 february

At first look this appears to be a picture of my nice new engine with just 200 miles on it.

You might notice I got a nice star effect with the ultra bright high afternoon sun (no filter used).
You might also notice it says DOHC and iV-tech . . I have NO IDEA what all that means

But did you look aaaaall the way to the right . . . and did you also happen to notice the feather (see inset). . .

Here's the story:

I was minding my own business driving home this afternoon on the HOV doing a respectable 70 MPH

A Pigeon decides to land mid-lane to peck for . . .what ever it is pigeons stop to peck for
There is no way to avoid or swerve for a STOOPID pigeon at 70 in the HOV
As I get right on top of it, it decides to take off . . . . . . TOO LATE!

I hit the bird, momentarily closed my eyes (reflex) and heard the bump-splat combo
There were feathers flying & blood spatters all over my windshield

I kept driving home . . . . . Is this a family show?

I won't SAY what I was thinking or feeling at that moment =P

Anyway, I got home took a look at the car & thought "AH! PaD" . . . . .How sick is that . . . HA!

I called my honey & told him of the adventure, "Don't worry about it, dear," he says, "I'll wash it for you when I get home"

Well isn't he just the sweetest thing, I thought, & went about my business.

The phone rings seconds later . . . . . "Honey," he says, "Was I suppose to care about the bird?"

I CRACKED UP!

I am a couple of years late, but it is still hilarious...

On a field trip we hit a pigeon with the van going like 70. That pigeon was with us for at least 100 miles! What we need to do to that car, is pull out that engine, and put in a 426 Hemi!!!!

... of no importance for the pigeon, alas!

I'm afraid people on here has correcly explained i-VTEC, but totally missed the meaning of DHOC. Fortunately, it is of no importance.
Enjoy!

thanks for commenting on my picture.. unfortunately, i don't know which one you commented on (i read it in my forum thing.)

"DOHC and iV-tech . . I have NO IDEA what all that means"

to define - DOHC = "Dual overhead cams"
to define - i-VTEC = "intelligent valve timing and lift electronic control"

to explain in english - DOHC = there are four chambers in your car (or six, if you have a v6) in which you have gas exploding to push pistons that make your car move. each of these four chambers have valves that let air in and out. Dual overhead cams means you have four holes for each chamber - two to let air in, two to let air out. having these pairs of holes for each of these gas-exploding chambers makes your car run more efficiently per amount of gas. still feel like i'm talking greek?

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm andhttp://auto.howstuffworks.com/question562.htm

should help.

to explain in english - iVTEC = you have an engine that balances two levels of power control to give you the most power you can out of your engine at each engine speed, no matter how hard you're pushing it. if i tried to explain how it does this, i'd lose you in a second.

You don't happen to write for a living do you? If not, you should consider it!
Guest 02-Mar-2004 01:19
Didn't mess your grille up did it? I would be sick at the thought of what that bird could have done.
Guest 01-Mar-2004 01:27
poor little guy,
BTW, DOHC = dual over head cam
which is a good thing

That is so funny! I don't laugh a lot but I chuckled a bit at that.

What a great (if somewhat tragic!) story! Unfortunately for pigeons: we have their common sense!!
Nice shot, BTW, and I like the inset work, too!

Poor pigeon. We can see the feather left in the engine. Nice pic.

Good story, they do seem suicidal, I thing looking for food fogs the brain.
Enjoy your new car.

Great story and photo! The pigeon, well...... I guess it just wasn't his day. :)

Poor bird at least you got PaD :) Nice engine!
VTEC - Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i stands for intelligent)
DOHC - Dual Overhead Cam

Great shot, humorous story. Impressive engine ;)
Guest 28-Feb-2004 23:48
Hope the new car is still alright.

Very nice engineering shot, Pete.

Its a sort of photojournalist thing, isn't it? Not quite like being in Iraq, but the same principle. When I was in Spain last year, I saw a plane take off with a bang, I saw a load of what looked like dust around the engine as it sped along the runway, which was in fact a birdstrike. It got airborne on one good engine but immediately landed - I bet the passengers were really pleased to be back on terra firma even if they had to wait overnight for a replacement plane.
I don't know Pete; you and cars....

Killer! Good job. Go out and get another one.

Oh God....I can imagine your thoughts on the way home..how do you make this funny?? I am sick sitting here laughing imagining your expression..and the "I have a PAD for today"...LOL LOL.
Guest 28-Feb-2004 22:20
LOL! Not the bird, but the story. We hit a Canadian goose last spring and it cracked the windshield. I started crying and then everyone started laughing at me. :/
