There are two herds on Assateague. One is on the Maryland side of the island and maintained by the National Park Service.
The other is on the Virginia side of the island and maintained by the Chincoteague fire department.
The Chincoteague ponies are the ones represented in the book "Misty of Chincoteague" by Marguerite Henry from 1947.
