11 SEP 09 WRITE IT DOWN

As I recalled the events of this date just eight years ago, I, like everyone else, can recall vividly exactly where I was.

It helped that I had written a very detailed journal of that day.

Just like I did when Kennedy died.

Over the years, I have always been impressed how I "remembered" that day in November . . .
and then re-read my version (from a high school writing assignment) and discovered how inaccurate my perfect memory was.

I suggest everyone do the same.

Our memories are dynamic, that is to say, they change over the years.
Our memories are influenced by our (current)life's experiences.
We don't have digital recorders in there.
And recalling the events of 9-11 in twenty or thirty or fifty years is going to get fuzzy and confusing at best.

Write everything you can recall . . every minute detail . . . down somewhere.
Keep it safely tucked away. (DO try to remember where.)

Or, for you bloggers, make sure it is write-protected on a disc somewhere.
Don't rely on your amazing ability to recall all that data in ten years, let alone fifty.

Very true indeed. Selective memory is common to us all: it's probably what keeps us sane a lot of the time, but all the best autobiographers seem to have lots of good memoir notes from which to draw. A fine image to accompany your thoughts, especially on this sombre anniversary.

You have given us all good advice and I certainly will act upon it.
The thing that sticks in my mind is that when I first turned on the radio I thought I was listening to a play, I will never forget the feeling I had when I very soon discovered the truth.

Yes, our memories fade. I keep a journal and have done so for quite some time. This is heart felt and a great image. But, the day lives on in our memories and hearts and we will never forget that day.

A moving image that says a lot.

that is so true pete.
the good memories always seem to be much better than what they really were.
and the bad memories. always seem to be much more painful than how we really felt at the time.

It's like when you go back as an adult, it's not as big as you remember when you were a child....good advice, Pete

You are right that our memories "shift" over time. The feeling we had at those events never leaves Good tribute.
