The Crucifixions

San Pedro Cutud, Pampanga

Diamond is the latest of a number of foreigners who have approached the village in recent years and asked to participate. These have included the British artist Sebastian Horsley, who got as far as having the nails banged in, but then fell off his cross as his foot rest gave way. He went on to stage a controversial exhibition of photographs, footage and paintings associated with his experience, and has been quoted as saying: "Christ was crucified to save mankind, I was crucified to save my career. Both of us failed."

A temporary ban on foreigners was actually imposed in 1996 after a Japanese volunteer, Shinichiro Kaneko, used footage of his crucifixion to make a sado- masochistic pornographic video.

Yes, him too. Pictured here is the highly controversial Dominik Diamond. He is a Scottish DJ, tabloid columnist and presenter that travelled over here to do a documentary to be aired on British television (channel 5). Some said it all started as a dare. Either way, there was no doubt that it was all staged for financial, commercial and personal gain.

The village elders had atually refused him, but he was able to convince them that he was sincere and his motivation was to be closer to God. The mere presence of his three personal television crews and three foreign photographers suggested otherwise.

Minutes before his turn to be nailed, you could see that the only thing that was being hammered away were some serious second thoughts. He knelt in front of the cross, back to the 10,000 strong crowd, and wept. Ten torturing minutes later, he got up and embraced the Chief 'Kristo' and walked away from the whole thing.

He was booed by some locals as he walked by.
