Northern Bottlenose Whale at SECC
Last week a rare bird, this week a rare mammal.
A Northern Bottlenose Whale was present at the SECC side of the Squinty Bridge for it's second day.
They are normaly found in waters over 1000 metres deep from the polar ice of the North Atlantic to Long Island Sound and to the Cape Verde Islands.
They feed mainly on squid, sea cucumbers, herring, cuttlefish and sea stars. Their feeding behavior is similar to the Sperm Whale in that they make long, deep dives for up to 70 minutes from 80 - 800 metres on average after which they surface to breathe for about 10 minutes.
Calves are born from April to June following a year long gestation period. Newborn calves measure about 3.5 m in length and are usually chocolate brown in color and nursed by the female for about a year.
UPDATE - Wednesday 23 September 2009, 1330hrs.
The marine life rescue unit has The Marine Life Rescue Unit have got the whale moving downriver (at the moment 1330hrs, just going past Braehead) so going in the right direction. On the negative side, the marine vet doesn't give good odds for the animal surviving and reaching the open sea.... Will keep you posted if I receive any further news.
Honey Buzzards at SECC!
The image is not of the birds at SEC, one bird was very similar to this bird though.
Yesterday (16 September 2009) I had the thrill of seeing two juvenile Honey Buzzards gliding slowly south over the Armadillo, they are rare birds in Scotland with only a few pairs nesting each year. These are the first Honey Buzzards I've ever seen, I've searched for them in Southern Spain, Cyprus, the Greek Island of Lesvos and also at their breeding areas in Norfolk to no avail. In typical Glasgow bus style, after waiting so long; two come along at once :)
Description's have been submitted to the local rarities committee, because they are so rare the record has to be accepted by the committee. Will post an update on their decission.

Black-headed Gull
This first winter bird was found by security last night and put in a box. I took it to Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust near Beith ater work. Gay had a look at it and gave it an antibiotic injection, it has a wing injury but doesn't seem too severe. It started eating mealworms straight away when offered to it.
Will post an update when I find out how the bird gets on at the rescue trust.
10-OCT-2008
Friday 10 October 2008

Lesser Black-backed Gull - juvenile
Another photo of the injured bird detailed in previous post.
UPDATE: Unfortunately the birds injuries were worse than initially thought, the bird had to be put to sleep. At least it didn't have to suffer the fate of starving to death as would have happened if it was left in the roof guttering.
02-OCT-2008
Injured Lesser Black-backed Gull
This injured juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gull was brought to my attention by Jim Milne (Building Services Manager), it was in the guttering between the Concourse and Hall 4. I went up on the roof and brought it down. It had injured it's left wing but otherwise seemed in good health, it ate some food and had a drink while in the temporary cage.
I finished work at 8pm and then took the bird to Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust near Beith, a quick exhamination revealed it may only have a dislocated wing so hopefully the bird will make a full recovery. I will put an update on the site when I get the information from Hessilhead.

22-JUN-2008
Risso's Dolphin
A Risso's Dolphin was spotted in the River Clyde at the SECC on Sunday 22nd June, the animal was present for three day's but dissappeared, hopefully back to the open sea. They normally live in deep water and feed mainly on squid, this one was well away from it's natural habitat.
20-MAY-2008
Buzzard over the centre
At 5.45pm a Buzzard drifted slowly SE over the SECC, it was being harassed by the local Lesser Black-backed Gulls and Carrion Crows. This is only the 2nd record for the site.
It was brought to my attention when I started work at 4.30pm today that a pair of Mallards were sitting near the VIP doors, this is not that unusual, at this time of year the birds are looking for nest sites and they sometimes turn up at unexpected places. The birds are fine and are perfectly healthy.
6-MAY-2008
Chiffchaff in hall 4
One of the cleaners brought my attention to a small bird at the tiered seating in hall 4. I went over with him and found the bird sitting still on the step, it was a Chiffchaff.
They winter in Africa and return to breed each summer, it would have been migrating through when it somehow found it's way in to hall 4. The bird was very weak and unfortunately died shortly after I picked it up.
This is only the second record of Chiffchaff on the site.
18-APR-2008
1st nest box occupied !!!
This morning while putting out the flags at the east entrance I noticed a Blue Tit alarm calling at a nearby Magpie. After the Magpie flew off the Blue Tit started singing and then the female bird appeared from inside the nest box, they were then seen taking nest material in to the box. Hopefully at least one brood will be fledged from the boxes this year.
17-APR-2008
SECC Nest Box scheme
At the beginning of the year the SECC funded the purchase of 12 nest boxes which were located around the site, 4 open fronted nest boxes (for Robin & Pied Wagtail) and 8 closed nest boxes (for Great & Blue Tit). The boxes were purchased from the RSPB Shop at the Lochwinnoch Reserve, these boxes are made from sustainable sources and profit from them helps the RSPB with their conservation work.
As of today (17 April 2008) none of the boxes seem to be occupied, I will keep a close eye on them and report any progress.
16-MAR-2008
Sparrowhawk - female
A female Sparrowhawk stayed in the compound workshop for most of the day, It was a strong flyer and looked healthy but for some reason it wouldn't fly outside. It eventualy flew outside in the afternoon only to fly back in when a Lesser Black-backed Gull flew at it, it eventualy left around 1530 hrs. This is very strange behaviour for a wild Sparrowhawk, maybe an escape from captivity?
2 Greylag Geese flew south over the compound at 1630 hrs.
18-FEB-2008
Sparrowhawk - female
This female took me by surprise by flying out of a group of trees about 30' from me in car park 6 and flying off towards the SECC main building.

Nesting Lesser Black-backed Gulls
Up to seven pairs of Lesser Black-backed Gulls nest on the roof of the SECC, there are usually only a few problems with people being intimidated by the birds swooping down at them. A real conflict of interest arose when the re-roofing of the main halls was planned to go ahead when the gulls were breeding.
I approached the management and very much to their credit they allowed me to intervene on the gulls behalf when re-roofing was carried out during 2006/07. This allowed the roofing work to go ahead as planned and allowed me access to monitor the birds and get involved with any conflicts between the two.
As it happened everything went pretty much as planned other than 3 young from a nest I didn't know about. They had to be moved for their own safety so I decided to take them to Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust where they fledged successfully. A successful outcome for the gulls and the SECC, unfortunately gulls get a lot of bad press and regarded by some as vermin. They are a victim of their own success; as they are so adaptable they have moved in to cities where food is abundant (due to our untidiness).
They can be aggressive during the breeding season, they swoop down on people but very rarely do they ever make contact (despite some of the press talking about birds "attacking" people), I have demonstrated this to several people who were surprised that the birds did not make contact with me despite standing still while they made repeated dive bombing runs at me.
They are (to me) very elegant birds that deserve more respect and to be left alone for the few weeks they need to rear their young, not to much to ask, is it?
24 JAN 2006
Peregrine - adult female
This magnificent female Peregrine was released by Andy Christie MBE of the Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust on 24th January 2006, it had flown in to an office window in Glasgow City Centre and was considered well enough to release. Because Peregrine's regularly perch on the Finnieston Crane at the SECC they thought that would be the best place to release it.
24-OCT-2006
Guillemot - adult winter
This bird turned up on the River Clyde near the Bell's Bridge at the SECC, Glasgow. They are scarce inland but are sometimes blown in by gales or driven by hunger when there are food shortages at sea.
14 FEB 2002
Peregrine - adult female
This female bird was sitting on top of the Finnieston Crane on 14th February 2002, birds regularly perch there through the winter.
If you are ever attending an event or just passing by, it's always worth a look to see if one of these magnificant birds is perched there.
Taken through Leica APO-Televid 77 with 20x WA eyepiece from opposite bank of the River Clyde
