They simply called the train 'the cans', a dedicated Oil tank train from Bakersfield to the Wilmington area of LA. The cars were a unique GATX design arranged as 12 interconnected cars to allow rapid loading and unloading. The power was arranged as 3x5 sets for the loads with the returning empties having all the power on the point. To maintain Refinery schedule and keep traffic on Tehachipi moving caused additional locomotives to be added as needed, or available.
Eventually a pipeline was built between the two points. The cars found service on the Coast Line moving Crude Oil in a similar assignment and are still running in 2015. I noticed there were not many photos of the cars or the train on the Web so I changed my priorities on the slide pile and pulled these out.
