The Northern California Explorer organized by Trains and Travel International follows the Sacramento River between Cantara Loop and the town of Dunsmuir. The location is called Shasta Retreat where Simpson road crosses the Sacramento River. The rear car of the train is a privately owned observation car named ATSF 33.
