The crew of the heavily modified 'Type A' Jordan spreader is adjusting the blades to the appropriate profile to clear snow away from the mainline at Mott Siding just north of Dunsmuir, Ca. This provides more room for later snow clearing by more typical locomotive mounted plows and also reduces snow blowing back onto the track. The center cab has been extended to cover the air compressor mounted on the rear deck. This view shows the supports for the blades and the locking mechanism to prevent the ram from collapsing as the snow is moved.
An interesting spotting feature is the railing shown along the bottom of the cab extension closest to the camera. This railing seems to have been installed only on SPMW 3419. This photo was most likely made during the early 1990's, notably after the crossing gates were installed at Mott Road crossing.
