Cranberry Harvesting

It is harvest time on the cranberry farms this time of year !

Saturday we visited 'Tilsonberry Farms' an independent grower
located near the banks of the Fraser River in Fort Langley.

Cranberries are interesting. They grow in diked fields in a dense thicket
that would be impossible to harvest without considerable ingenuity.

This ingenuity takes the form of, flooding the field and using a shaker
device to loosen the berries, causing them to float to the surface. The
floating berries are then corralled by workers who use a boom of floating boards
to move them to the end of the field where they are gathered and later
cleaned and sorted.

The process is fun to watch and the harvesters, all older Indo-Canadian males,
in this case, were friendly, happy to be photographed and even shared their
delicious lunch with us!

I never knew that they grew cranberries round these parts. I like the curves in the composition and the strong splash of colour.

It is fun to watch and if there are 2-3 fields next together and flooded and unharvested at the same time it give the Red Sea new meaning :)

From your pics, I can't believe they really flooded the entire fields! I didn't see them so near so it's a shock. Glad you & Ethel have a good time.

This is cool. I've never seen a cranberry farm, much less the harvesting process. Hadn't even thought about it. But it's very photogenic. Thanks for sharing with us!
