September 10 2005:
Railway Control Room

Today in England it is Heritage Weekend, a weekend where various buildings are opened up to the public.

Some of these buildings are more obscure than others and a number are only open to the public on this weekend.

One such example was this Railway Control Room in Woking which dates from 1937, and only closed in 1998. It is a listed building, meaning that it cannot be demolished or be altered internally or externally.

Its purpose was to control the distribution of electricity on the local rail network, for example redistributing power from one sub-station to another if there was a fault, or cutting off power when maintenance men were on the line.

I also visited the Watts Chapel in Compton. It’s a hidden treasure…..

Really pleasing shot. I like the limited palette and the compositional sensibility throughout

Very elegant; too bad it only gets seen once a year.

Here in Scotland, Heritage weekend is taking place every weekend in September... We obviously have too much heritage for a single weekend :)
