I remember many, many years ago as a child travelling back along the Thames embankment, after having seen my grandparents, aunts and uncles. A landmark that always stood out for me at night was the illuminated ‘Oxo’ building. Oxo was actually a well known of brand of gravy, and presumably in the ‘sixties they could afford to manufacture or pack such a low value item in the centre of London.
Surrounding that building were many homes for ordinary folk, and when the site became derelict plans were laid to put the whole area over for offices and such like. The local community fought against this, and they formed a ‘not-for-profit’ company to ensure that affordable housing was made available as well as a degree of commercial development on this site, which lies between the Tate Modern and the National Theatre on the south bank. The ‘Oxo’ tower has been retained.
To celebrate twenty years of this initiative, the Coin Street community festival was held today with stalls selling many ethnic wares and some live music.
There were some real characters on the grass ‘dance floor’ including this guy. The light was pretty poor, and so not conducive to pin sharp images.
But I couldn’t resist him being my PaD.
