July 19 2004:
Ye Olde Basingstoke

Old Basing, Hampshire

The title for this photo will not mean anything to many of you. But Basingstoke is famous for a being a modern featureless town full of roundabouts, housing estates and everything else that follows on from that. My Uncle was one of many people who moved out there about 35 years ago as his firm relocated from a cramped and expensive London to this modern town 40 miles to the south west.

But this charming cottage was not found in Basingstoke, but in its forebear, Old Basing. In olden times this nearby village was probably the most important settlement around the area, but now it acts as a dormitory village to its brash big brother. Fortunately, Old Basing seems to lack a large housing estate, but I imagine occupiers of cottages such as these saw to that!

Reminds me of Ann Hathaway's cottage where I visited years ago, although this one is definitely newer I guess with the brick. I always loved thos thatched roofs and always wondered why they didn't sprout in the rain! Lovely storybook photo, Ray!

This is so cute. Looks like a gingerbread house.

Lovely house, I really like those thatched roofs, especially the small awning above the door. They have become really rare over here.

Wonderful shot. I'm delighted to learn that some of these still exist!

This is so pretty, and SO charming. I have always wanted to see a home like this. Thanks, Ray!

Just lovely! Think the owners would mind if I moved in as well?
