October 15: Stanley,I Presume

Pirbright

This is the grave of Henry Morton Stanley, and yes, it was he who uttered those famous words “Dr. Livingstone, I presume”. Stanley, a journalist and a naturalised American, was sent to find the intrepid explorer Livingstone and they met on the shores of Lake Tanganyika on November 10, 1871. You’ll see that his African name, Bula Matari, is also inscribed on the Dartmoor Granite gravestone. I didn’t know until this lunchtime that Stanley was buried here at the church in Pirbright, just two or three miles away from my home, such are the surprises this project throws up!

How interesting and to have it so near to you.
Great conversion, I guess we wouldn't have been able to read the inscription, without.

A heavy tombstone and interesting grave site to find for the challenge. Great find!

Famous, yes, but reduced today to a stone. A fate we all face.

Great one, Ray. Wonderful depth and texture.

Thanks: I used black and white to illustrate history, but also put in a lot of contrast in Photoshop to give that granite stone even more 'bite'~~~Ray.

What an interesting headstone. You captured it's grittyness perfectly. Great texture and I love the black and white.

That's a nice capture - and the BW gives it the right mood and a link to the past
