Aldershot is very much an army town, but this observatory building is a quirky part of that. Patrick Alexander was an aviator who had an astronomical telescope and in 1906 donated his equipment to the War Office and offered to fund this building in the town.
These days, this observatory is on the verge of looking very out of place as a large housing development is taking place right next to it. It is never used, and so a decision will have to be made on its future, its removal to a local army museum being a possibility.
