a traditional fingerpost

Froxfield, Hampshire view map

In Britain, we still have many fingerposts like this in our rural lanes. Prior to the 1960s, they were more widespread, but their design was not compatible with faster moving traffic.

The ones around today are a mixture of originals, replicas and refurbishments. This one has two different typefaces so I imagine the two plates facing the viewer here may be original, but the other two not?

Of course, there are plenty of finger posts used for footpaths, cycleways and local directions within town for example.

I'd be interested to know if fingerposts are/were used in your country for motor traffic as the Wikipedia article only mentions Britain and Ireland.

No such posts in Sweden for motor traffic. I have only seen them in GB. Ciao, Ragnar

Wish I had seen these when we were over in March. Neat signs!

I love the expression, not used here. I love the destination names... so British sounding.

Not commonly used here now, Ray, though these are more " of interest " fingerposts

I like yours best and have some of them among my UK photos, especially the Hampshire ones :)

Nice picture of a fascinating subject. I rather like these signposts with the circle on top.
