The village of Chawton just outside Alton would not have the significance it now has had it not been for the writer Jane Austen.

She lived at this house from 1809 until 1817, shortly before she died at the age of 41. During this time, her most famous works were written.

Also in Chawton is her brother Edward's somewhat larger dwelling, which is also open to the public.
