Lingfield

Lingfield, Surrey view map

The inscription on St Peter's Cross reads: This cross was built circa 1473 to designate the boundaries of Puttenden and Billeshurst Manors. The Cage for the detention of petty offenders added in 1773 was last used in 1882 to detain poachers.
The cage door is at the back.

Poach or starve.... I imagine that tree has been there just as long and the cage. !! A great find, Ray

Interesting history on this old marker. Poaching must have been a common occurrence, since they bothered to build a detainee shed.
