Westerham

Kent view map

This statue of Winston Churchill sits on the green in the centre of Westerham - using a plinth donated by Tito on behalf of Yugoslavia. He lived at nearby Chartwell between 1922 and his death in 1965. Also in the square is a more traditional statue of General James Wolfe who was born here - he died whilst in a battle to secure Canada for the British. On a lighter note, John Lennon bought a poster in an antiques shop here - it was for Pablo Fanque's circus - those familiar with the Sgt Pepper album will see the connection. However, the town seems to have no association with a Mr Kite.

[Photographer: “I hope, sir, that I will shoot your picture on your hundredth birthday.”] I don’t see why not, young man. You look reasonably fit and healthy.

Churchill, 30 November 1949, Hyde Park Gate, London (cited in Langworth, Churchill: In His Own Words)
