Found this sign on a gate by a private house. Closer inspection at the far end and it says LNER - the London and North Eastern Railway that ceased to be in 1948, but the sign probably lasted for many more years somewhere - although I do wonder if this could be a replica?
And those shillings, we lost those in 1971.
Why was I here? This is just outside the now disused test airfield of Wisley. They test flew the Vickers VC10 and BAC One Eleven here, and it closed in 1972. Ever since, the place has been largely derelict and plans to build houses here has met with opposition. I was trying to find the spot I once went up to see those then brand new airliners, but I think a house must be there now!
