Accrington, England view map

towns in the north of England often have an indoor market housing independent traders and that is something we lack in the south, especially the south east. Down here, we do have markets, but they are usually smaller and quite different.

This one in Accrington in Lancashire is in an old purpose built market hall and also features a balcony, like a few others I've visited.

The nearby town of Blackburn has a new one on the ground floor of a shopping mall - very good to see that flourishing and that the tradition has been kept.

The Mexican neighborhoods in Houston have some large indoor markets that are quite popular among that part of our population (a large part). But nothing like this, especially with a balcony. I like it.

I see Ann has mentioned the Pannier Markets in Tavistock which was granted it's charter in 1105 and has survived without a break for over 900 years.More special to me because generations of my family would have gone there... It is lovely to see this one still flourishing too.

A timely shot. I'm pleased to hear that Markets are flourishing somewhere. Here in Devon they are all under threat of development apart from the Pannier Markets.
