Week 4

Window Light

It is soft, natural, and very flattering in many situations. Instead of destroying the appropriate highlights and shadows with flash, when you use ambient window light you retain the correct relationship between light and dark in the picture.

Submit up to three window light photos of any subject. For one or two of the images you can combine artificial light and window light if this appeals to you.

Jim's Comments:

Hi Chuck,

Your shot of St. Peters Cathedral is the 'mother of all window light shots'! What a stunning and dramatic image. The shafts of light are so powerful, and your exposure is perfect in this extremely difficult exposure situation. The man in the lower left is quite an interesting addition, but I keep thinking to myself how amazing this would be if you had a priest in full regalia there. I'm hoping to visit the Vatican next Feb. after I finish conducting a photo workshop in Venice, and I'm really looking forward to it.

The photo of your tie is well done. The window lighting shows off the texture of the fabrics nicely. The photo in your office is superb, even though it's not a work of art. Its actually a great stock shot for an agency, because it conveys the idea of business well. It is well done in terms of lighting from the window, choice of depth of field, and the perspective is great too.

The interior of the Prague cathedral is beautiful. The window lighting from the top is always dramatic in cathedrals. Your exposure is good, the color of the lighting is good, and you captured the enormity of this building. Excellent work. One of my favorite subjects is cathedrals in Europe.
