PAD Journal Entries

This project, like others found here on Pbase, is my photo a day gallery. The idea behind it is to take my camera with me while I go on a walk each day. My wonderful Jack Russell Terrier Abby will be with me most days, unless I am out of town and walking without her. She is a very patient photo assistant. The benefits of this adventure will include getting exercise, staying healthy, spending quality time with my dog, and of course, having fun shooting photos. The day I have decided to begin this journey is March 1, 2005. How convenient!

Well, after the first month, I realized that my work schedule hasn't allowed the walk each day and that I am tending to improvise when I get home. We'll see what happens next...

Update 5/21/05...after almost 3 months, the PAD has become quite an interesting endeavor. I have learned much about my style and preferences and look forward to continuing the journey. Today I made the "executive decision" to use the next couple of months or so reprocessing photos from last summer's trip to Paris using my new PS skills (something that will make Meg very happy, since she wants to finish her scrapbook). I will also be buried with photos from our upcoming trip to Italy. So my PAD project for the next couple of months will involve posting one photo a day from these trips. After I am finally caught up, I will move back to shooting one a day.

6/18/05 Update: Recently back from Italy, I should be moving back into shooting every day in about two weeks. I have finished the Paris Photo retouching and am 1/3 of the way through the Italian photos. What I have learned so far is that by seeing a finished product before you shoot, you are much more effective. And what I mean by finished product is actually what the output after Photoshop has the potential to look like.

7/27/05 UPDATE: After almost complete the shots from Italy and then from a last minute trip to Toronto, I'm in the beginning stages of scanning 1200 slides from trips to Europe in 1993 and 1994. I anticipate this project taking two months. In that time I will post PAD's from this collection as well as new shots I take along the way for fun or for my Mastering Light class at Betterphoto.com.

9/4/05 UPDATE: Upon completion of a couple of fantastic books about photography, I've learned that many photographers spend 1/4 of their time shooting and 3/4 of their time processing their work. I seem to be falling into this ratio; and it fits. From my recent slide scans, I have plenty of photos to work on and will be taking more for my BP classes and 100 photo project. So for me, the PAD project has evolved into the idea of processing one photo per day, not necessarily taking one photo per day. It seems to only make sense, since I shoot so many when I am out with the camera. And I have found some real gems among my older shots. So that's my plan. And I think since making this change the quality of my work has improved dramatically. I am no longer settling for bad shots just to get a PAD. Afterall, the whole idea here is to improve my photography and the results are 100% visible.
