even better storytelling

This is one of my favorite images of all time for the very reason that it is all about storytelling. We arrive here, not necessarily at the beginning of a story, but in the middle. And the end of the story is completely left to the imagination.

I love that quote by Arbus..
The reason I like this photo is two-fold. One is because the content is evocative.. it lends the viewer to wonder what is going on in the photo AND in the man's head. What is he thinking? Is he going to defy the marked sign or is he thinking "Who'd dive in there anyhow?"

or was someone lost in that pool and he comes back when he misses them?

The second part is the composition and treatment. I love the curve of the pool and walkway. And I especially like the vignettiing.. adds depth and emotion

Yes, a photo is an instant in time. There is a before and an after. The viewer gets to complete the past and project the future. One of my favorite quotes sort of fits this idea too. "A photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know." ~ Diane Arbus

True, true. An image should only tell part of a story. Why? There should be some mystery. Why? So that the viewer can be engaged. This is best done when there is "space" left in the image for the viewer to meet the artist/author half-way. The viewer needs to bring something of themself to the image to make the experience complete.
