After a gap of a year, we're back. These are some of my photos from the 2022 carnival taken during our visit from 16th February to 2 March.
We've been visiting Venice for the Carnival for about a decade; it's one of the three highlights of my year. Venice is probably the world's most beautiful city in so many ways. We love it. Unlike many tourists who don't stray from St. Mark's Square during their short visit, we come for two weeks and have the time to explore this amazing city.
We are staying in Giudecca, a long island about 200m south of Venice proper. Giudecca is the "authentic" Venice with its working-class and industrial districts. There are relatively few tourists here (even though Giudecca has great architecture, scenery, and restaurants).
We stay at the Giudecca Hilton, the Molino Stucky, which is a gigantic converted industrial building. The conversion is quite magnificent and this is (in my view) one of the world's great hotels.
From the hotel and Giudecca, you get a great view of Venice across the water. The Hilton has a free shuttle, but we generally use the frequent water bus from one of the four stops on the northern coast of Giudecca. The trip from Giudecca to Venice is less than five minutes.
Having stayed at the Molino Stucky many times, we've become friendly with the staff (mainly in the restaurant). They now treat us like family ... That's one of the joys of returning to the same place year after year.
However, I must say that this is characteristic of Venice: you meet someone once and you are an acquaintance; you meet them a second time and you are a friend; you meet them a third time and you are family. Another advantage of Venice (and Italy) is that it has great bread, cheese and beer (e.g., Moretti La Rossa). I sometimes complain that fate cruelly put me in England rather than Italy (or Spain).
I hope that you like the random images of Venice in this collection. I have another website at www.alanclements.me that includes some of the images I have displayed at public exhibitions or which I am thinking of displaying.
