one-more-sunset

What can you do?
Driving home from a non-productive hunt for candid people shots
Looked to the right and ..well

pulled over and started shooting
ended up sharing this spot with 4 different cars pulling over to shoot
Boy I don't know what's in the air but it is grabbing the reds
I'm sure a lot of it is hydrocarbons
(What a transition)

I'm an old conservative, raised by a child of the depression, so I'm not a tree hugger
(not that there's anything wrong with that)
I believe that much of our involvement in these middle east wars, as much as I hate to admit it,
is due to our dependence on foreign oil.
I also strongly believe the public is much more to blame than whoever happens to be in office at the time.
From my father's generation, we have turned in to a gluttenous, self-serving, egocentric group of people who shudder at the thought of carpooling, doing without air conditioning going full blast, or economical cars. etc, etc.

What would happen if we no longer needed any foreign oil?
We could then be sure we were helping other altruistically other than motivated by our need for something in return.
(Dafur vs. Iraq)

How easy would it be to send a strong message to OPEC .
And guess what,it also goes for our oil industry!!
If we are truley upset with oil prices, decrease demand drastically and see what happens.
We live in a capitalistic society that WORKS!!
If we declared a day that nobody drove their car or ran anything electric,to send this message
the impact would be almost devastating.
If someone knows how to estimate the income lost by this simple measure please let me know.
It is HUGE I just don't know how one might calculate it.

back to my dads generation
They did this during ww2 and did it for their country
Could our current generation pull this off. I hope so but I doubt it

What about plastic bags. They are made from oil!!

Introduced just over 25 years ago, the ugly truth about our plastic bag addiction is that society's consumption rate is now estimated at well over 500,000,000,000 (that's 500 billion) plastic bags annually, or almost 1 million per minute.
I'm trying to find out how much oil is used in this process.

It's a great idea......but flawed. The problem is that the oil industry would make their money back the next day or two. People wouldn't by gas for a day but they would use their cars. Then they would buy twice the fuel the next day. The oil industry knows that citizens and industry are too dependent on oil to stop using it. Even if they stopped for a day, so what. It would affect all of the companies the same. They may have a small surplus but that would be gobbled up by our gluttonous society quickly. Good idea though.
