Aplomado Falcon

Bosque del Apache, NM

This is my pièce de résistance from this trip to the Bosque.

The Aplomado Falcon is about the size of the Prarie Falcon and formerly ranged into the southern U.S. along the Mexican
border from Texas to Arizona, and was fairly common in open desert and grasslands in the summer prior to the 1880's.
By the early part of the 20th century it had all but disappeared. There is a population of this bird near Chihuahua, Mexico.

You can image my thrill to have seen this falcon so close, let alone to get several shots of him!

(Although he is banded, he is in no way in captivity. I believe it is because he is so rare that he is being monitored)
