Bee Fly

Texas Canyon, Dragoon, Arizona

(family Bombyliidae) could be mistaken for large, fuzzy mosquitoes because of a long proboscis on
some species. The beak is for sipping nectar, not blood. Most of these are covered in long hairs
and many have lovely patterns of the wings. Until recently, I had no idea there was such an insect
and there are more than 200 North American species. They are called Bee Fly because they hover over
flowers the way Bees do.
This one is very fuzzy and very tiny!
