The Old Riviera del Pacifico
The Social, Civic and Cultural Center of Ensenada occupies the former Riviera del Pacifico, once a gambling casino and hotel. Today the building is used primarily for special functions, such as conventions, social events and occasional art shows.
The mansion, with its elegant Moorish-style architecture, detailed mosaics, intricate ironwork and extravagant chandeliers betrays its former use. It said that Al Capone's money built the casino, and it was a favored gathering place for wealthy Americans and Mexicans during the Prohibition era. Among the glamorous clientele were Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, Johnny Weissmuller and the Ali Kahn; Jack Dempsy once managed the casino. After the Mexican government outlawed gambling in the late 1930s, the building fell into disuse. It was nearly 40 years later before refurbishment began.
