A copy of the statue worshipped as the great goddess of fertility in the sanctuary of Artemis of Ephesus. Artemis's first cult statue was erected in the Artemision temple in the seventh century B.C. From Ephesus, her cult was carried by the Phoenicians to Massilia (Marseilles) and made its way to Rome, where Diana's temple on the Aventine Hill had a statue modeled on the Ephesus type. The goddess's ceremonial apron (ependytes) is adorned with fertility symbols (called by some scholars multi-breasts, by others ostrich eggs or bulls' testicles) and is surrounded by representations of bees, roosters, and bullsí heads.
