Wren Eggs

In May I watched two Wren going
In and out of my large Birdhouse
On the deck. The two build a nest.
In Early June, three small eggs were deposited.
The Wren visited regularly.
The outside temperature ran in triple digits
For weeks. I felt concerned when the Wren
Stopped visiting. More Weeks passed.
Why wasn’t I seeing baby Wren? I wondered.
Periodically I checked and the 3 eggs were
Still there. In the middle of August a Wren
Came and peeked into the opening in the
Bird House, looked around and flew off.

Did the excessive heat make the eggs non-
Viable? They are paper thin—one cracked
In my fingers when I gently picked it up.
I felt emotional as the fluid
Inside the egg ran into my hand, and the
Yellow was visible. Found myself praying.

The songs of the WREN were sorely missed
this Season.

So very sad. A poignant story. V
