The Rose

This composition brought up thoughts
Of both a movie and a church hymn for different reasons.

(Movie)
The Rose is a 1979 American drama film
directed by Mark Rydell, and starring Bette Midler,
Alan Bates, Frederic Forrest, Harry Dean Stanton,
Barry Primus, and David Keith. Loosely based
on the life of Janis Joplin, the film follows a self-destructive
rock star in the late 1960s, who struggles to cope
with the pressures of her career and the demands
of her ruthless business manager.

And I also had in mind the Hymn—

Lo How a Rose Ere Blooming,
Translator: Theodore Baker

Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming
From tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming
As men of old have sung.
It came, a flower bright,
Amid the cold of winter
When half-gone was the night.
2 Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
The Rose I have in mind:
With Mary we behold it,
The virgin mother kind.
To show God's love aright
She bore to men a Savior
When half-gone was the night.
3 This Flower, whose fragrance tender
With sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor
The darkness everywhere.
True man, yet very God,
From sin and death He saves us
And lightens every load
