Person

Does anyone know the possible story behind
this embroidered image? It is hand-stitched on
a satin pillow.

Note: thanks for your comments. Wei says this person is
a character in a famous novel,
— “Sha Monk, one of the monks in the novel "Journey to the West.”
Journey to the West is one of four of China's
great masterpiece novels of the Ming Dynasty.
The author of the novel lived
approximately 1500-1583.”

A beautiful piece of work which surely have need a lot of hours of work. The comment of John Vass seems appropriate. The clothes he wears are Japanese style... V.

He is not a Samurai. Because the way he is dressed, plus it looks like he is carrying his tool chest and personal effects in a bag. He has the hat of a craftsman! Possibly a carpenter. What looks like a broom could actually be a wood chisel for shaving planks smooth. He looks mature enough to have finished an apprenticeship. He could be going out to look for his fortune and future having learned his craft.
That's what I would get from it!
