SCORNED
Seven year old Sabrina helped out with this image. Originally she was hoping
we might make a witch-like picture. But alas, when we went to check out the
chest where all the Halloween costumes were kept, we could find no witch's
hat. And so this was the selection of clothing she made (toy gun included)
and the thought here was to go for one of those melodramatic Hollywood
type images made in the 1930's or '40s.
Now trying to express the idea of "scorned" to a seven year old turns
out to be no easy task. At least at first. But with the over dramatized
clowning around we were doing while making this image, Sabrina seemed
to catch on to the essence of the idea soon enough (she's fairly
precocious in that way and always quite comfortable in front of
the camera -- both an ease and a joy to work with).
Some have asked about the lighting for these kind of shots. In this
case, it's actually just one handheld flash, with a series of images
made which are later cut and pieced together in Photoshop, somewhat
giving the illusion of a singular image with seeming multiple light
sources. The individual images used for this particular shot of
Sabrina can be found *here*.
