Archibald G. Johnston (#31)

Flint, Michigan, U. S. A.

Archibald G. Johnston, 1850-1940

Identification of Archy was made by his ears. Fortunately, in spite of the beard and aging, the ears remain pretty much the same throughout all of the years.

Archie had lost his left leg in a logging accident. His peg leg is artfully hidden behind the Newel post, possibly. We need to keep in mind that this is a reverse tintype image. So, what appears to be his right leg in the image is actually his left leg. I am uncertain as to when the accident occurred.

This image is from an original tintype photograph which was scanned, emailed to me, and restored in 2005. The tintype image measures 2-7/16"x3-9/16". full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

I am a cousin to Jess Berry, our mothers were sisters. I'm going through Moms photos and found a picture of who I'm sure is Archibald Johnston and his left peg leg. The writing on the back says "Grandpa Johnston". Would love to upload this picture to you.....
My Mom was Elsie Lois Reed nee Hamann, her Mom was Elsie Adelaide Hamann nee Knowles, her mom was Alice Agusta Curle Johnston nee Knowles and her father was Archibald Johnston!!

My grand mothers grand father was Archibald Johnston. He had a homestead near Maintistique Michigan. Grandma said he was a legend in his own time. He had lost a leg and when he needed help as he got older he move to Flint Michigan to live with my grand parents. The 1940 US Census listed him as living with them on Bonbright St. at 89 years old. He shot himself with his own pistol when he was about 93. His parting note was "I's 2 old". I wonder if that is his picture?

It's wonderful that you are restoring all these photos. I would estimate this one was taken around 1880.
