If our Y-DNA Johnston-and-variants research project is correct, then Lochwood Castle was the home of my direct-line ancestors. My son and I visited there some years ago, and took a few photographs, not knowing the significance of the ruins at the time. I did take a few chinking rocks from a small pile onsite as souvenirs, now a remembrance of "Home Sweet Home". The wall to the right of the tower was actually 2 stories high at one time. Nearby farms used the ruins as a quarry for stones which they used to build foundations for their homes and barns.
Lochwood Tower was in a direct line of sight with Wamphray Tower's signal hill, a man-made hill with a signal post on the summit. They had a fairly sophisticated method of warning each other of Engish raiders. I wonder how many others were in the "signal tower chain"? This was too good a system to use only between two castles or fortalices.
