Here is the back of the fence, showing the 2 braces glued in place and a machinist's level in place to check accuracy. I used Titebond III Glue - love it.
When I made this fence I did it with whatever scrap materials that I had on hand, in this case 3/4" MDF, and it worked just fine. The Cadillac of materials for this project would be 3/4" Baltic Birch, but I didn't have any on hand, and I didn't feel like going out and buying a piece just for this project. The MDF should be sealed all around, and I'll do this with Clear Watco Danish Oil. It has been left uncoated for 2 weeks, so far, and I've not been able to measure any significant changes in it, but there's no need to take a chance with it as the cut edges are not sealed at all and are prone to absorbing moisture from the air.
