10Jun05 Root Cellar

Ledyard, CT

Photo a Day, Day 73...Our neighbors' root cellar which dates back to at least the early 1800s. There are 3 small rooms inside which can be seen somewhat in the alternate... one to either side and then one straight... They have some foam on the floor right now but the rock work is quite impressive. Apparently there are several root cellars in the area and all of them open to the East.

Man, that would hold a lot of roots! Very neat structure, and you got the
lighting perfect on it. A very New England type of structure.

Looks a little like Saddam's spider hole.
Seriously though, a great shot. I like the patterns of the rocks and trees.

The root cellars were used to store vegetables, fruit, meat, diary products, canned goods (glass jars of fruit/pickles etc) through the summer. The root cellars keep everything cool and prevent spoilage. The cellars tend to be about 40 degrees cooler than outside temps and are primarily underground. Looking from the other side you would never know this is here.

Beautiful .. the red on the ground around the structure adds that special touch! :)
