Coming to Bug Ya

Something Interesting

I did not realize the Asian Lady Beetle AKA Harlequin beetle, (note the white head) had eyes similar to flies & found this rather interesting. Did not know they could stink, leave stains or bite! Very interesting!

Can be a pest:
Inside they can omit a terrible odor & yellowish fluid they can secrete if disturbed. This fluid can stain surfaces on which they crawl such as walls or furniture. Can be aggressive & bite if they land on the skin.

Outside they are becoming a problem in vineyards, where they can end up being "collected" along with the grapes resulting in an "off" taste in the wine.

The Asian Lady Beetle was introduced as a biological control against crop pests. The larvae are larger than most native ladybird larvae & both adults & larvae consume aphids.
It is a ravenous predator of arthropod pests such as aphids, mites, thrips, scale & Lepidoptera eggs.

Benefit: It has contributed to a decrease in pesticide use on many crops & in orchards.

A fine closeup, not the “sweet” ladybugs of my youth!

Interesting reading... and those eyes are not what I expected.

As in life some are good, others not so. One is Herbivore, one Carnivore and one of 5000 species.
An excellent macro capture. V

That is interesting! v Never experienced the pest part but they do okay by us but in our yard the wasps are better at cleaning up pests.
