Red Cone Gall Wasp

Red Cone Gall Wasp (Andricus kingi)

These galls result from a female wast that lays one egg at a time. She then injects the leaf with a substance that stimulates the development a protective, nutrient-rich tissue layer around each egg. Larvae feeding on the shell produce chemicals that change it into an incubating gall.
