Devil's Lake State Park, Baraboo, Wisconsin
In 1873 train tracks, passing along the edge of Devil's Lake, were completed for regular service into Baraboo. Trains did not bring the first people here, however. Effigy Mound Builders (Native Americans) were active in this region around 1000 years ago. There are three animal mounds in the park that are still in good shape (dating from this period). The oldest authenticated site for man in the Upper Midwest is a rock shelter located in this part of Wisconsin. It has been established that man was here 10-12 thousand years ago.
