Holy Hill- The National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians- Hubertus, Wisconsin

Some time around 1855 a wooden cross was erected on the hill. Legend has it that a French hermit experienced a miraculous cure after worshipping at the cross. Since that time pilgrims in search of cures have come to the hill now known as the National Shrine of Mary. The Shrine is staffed by the Discalced Carmelites of Bavaria (an order of Friars).

In 1863 a small chapel was built. In 1931 the church and monastery were built.
The original wooden cross resides there and can be viewed. The Basilica sits 1300 feet above sea level. The area is very hilly as a result of a glacier 10,000 years ago.
