After the trail, I moved on to the actual fort. The fort is one of the best preserved 19th century forts in the country. The Confederate Army occupied the fort until it was taken by the Union army in 1862. It was the base of Union operations in the area until the end of the Civil War. This is the view coming up the path to the drawbridge, the cannons appearing on the left of the drawbridge.
