Graduated from Garrison in1950 age and 10. Supposed to go to Lovejoy. No way. My aunt Ame lia Cole Liddell was principal. Mother's teachers still there. Anticipated too much pressure. Went to school in Moline instead. Only 5 Black's at John Deere. Family moved to so. Calif. Fireworks still has a place in my heart. Cousin late Sylvester McWhorter stayed in centreville. I miss the duck and noodle from Venice and Brooklyn. I feel there's no hope for my home town.

What is left of the "old " East St.Louis is hardly worth saving. Born there in 1932; graduated from Central Catholic (gone)in 1951; left in 1951 for Navy duty on the West Coast. Came "home" several times in four years and each flight home while passing over E.S.L reminded me of bombed out Berlin after WWII. Very sad. Decided to stay in Southern California to begin my education. B
