In the center of this picture, on the ground floor of the white building, was E St Louis Walgreens - where I worked in 1991 - 1992.

I was born in East St. Louis in 1946 and lived there until 1967. It was a thriving, vibrant place to grow up. I believe the Walgreen's in this picture hung on as long as it could, long after the city died. I remember eating lunch at their lunch counter when I worked downtown. My family lived in Edgemont, just a few blocks from Belleville, but we hardly ever went there-our hometown had everything we needed. How could this happen in one lifetime?
