Nature's Climbing Tool

Richfield, MN

Climbing bean plants use twining stems, rather than tendrils, to grab onto support poles. The flexible, fast-growing tips of the main vine reach out and naturally spiral around the pole using a growth movement called thigmotropism, which causes the plant to wrap tightly when it touches a surface.
This is a bean plant in my daughter's garden.

“growth movement called thigmotropism” I have never heard that phrase before, who would know that, certainly not me. Excellent interpretation of the challenge. Paul
