Wind Spirt and Norwegian Viva

The Wind Spirit is our ship's sister ship. Yes, it's missing its aft mast. Its passenger capacity is about 4 percent of the Norwegian Viva's. It only has two restaurants, and doesn't have any water slides. No cabins have balconies. None even have windows. It's nearly 40 years old. Why on earth would anyone choose it?

At their age I'm not sure anything is state-of-the-art, Paul (though ships are kept updated with navigation and safety equipment, communications, wi-fi, flat screen TVs, etc. Her sister ship, the Wind Star, ably handled some windy days in the Agean, and their other sister ship, the Wind Song, did just fine in the South Pacific in 1995.

We like them because the experience is what we imagine being on a large yacht would be. Little is asked of passengers. Stay out-of-the way when enjoying the open bridge (one of our favorite things to do when cruising), and don't touch anything during the kitchen tour.

A ship that might interest you even more is Lindblad's National Geographic Explorer. We've made two round-trip Drake Passage crossings on her. Fortunately, the biggest seas we've experienced are about five meters. Furniture was strapped down, and ropes were provided to navigate open areas without railing, but passengers didn't have to strap themselves into bed.

She's a similar ship to the Hondius, which got so much attention, and she stops at the same off-the-beaten path islands. I'd sail on any of these again.

Good question, why would anyone choose it? I’m sure you have your reasons and who are we to minimize or criticize your choice. Is it like a Dude Ranch cruise where you have to help scrub the deck, hoist the sails and paint marine lacquer on wood surfaces? Of course not but being that small I would hope it has state of the art motion stabilizers. 😉 Paul
