A Ball of Feathers

Quail Creek, AZ

This is a baby quail who is only 24 hours old.
The mother laid her eggs inside a hose reel in our side yard.
She laid nine eggs, with only 4 hatching.

The little ones don't have any sense. They follow mom around, and hide when she hides. Also, papa quail sits on our fence and is the 'lookout" . When he squawks, mom heads for the bushes, and the chicks follow.

Definitely a cute little fledgling. Sensing danger like a big ole guy named Jim? 😉. Paul

Mother quail do not abandon the chicks (most birds do not). Over the last couple of days we have watched as she has taught them how to eat off the ground and to hide in the bushes if they sense danger..

That's a wonderful picture....and a great story. I suspect it warms your heart...I am surprised a little that the mother hasn't run off. You must be a good keeper of their home. Good on you. Traveller
